2010 Renaissance Faire Was A Success!

Crimson and yellow banners flew across a perfect blue sky as Konocti Christian Academy (KCA) opened its fifth annual Renaissance Faire and Shakespeare in the Meadow fundraiser on Saturday, May 8. Over 270 students, families, and guests walked back in time to spend a day in a beautiful meadow to be immersed in music, feasting, games, and theater as the students of KCA entertained them.

Musicians Bill VanDerWall on acoustic guitar, Paul Krohn on flute, and Aaron Bielenberg on violin played for guests throughout the day. Strolling troubadour Michael Kimbell-Auth played guitar and announced events as guests moved easily from activity to activity. Sandy Goss and Regina Aponte’s kindergarten and first grade students amused the crowd with their rendition of “The Twelve Days of Shakespeare”. Becky Madison and Jamie Shaw’s second and third graders performance of “Kids in Tights” impressed the crowd with their comedy and theatric skill.

A gourmet lunch of pulled pork, smoked ribs, roasted asparagus, garlic potatoes, chocolate-dipped strawberries, artisan rolls and gourmet cookies satisfied guests as they ate in the meadow and took part in the live auction. Many wonderful items were won in both the live and silent auctions and the lucky bidders walked away with smiles. Banners advertising our generous sponsors' logos waved in the breeze as well as adorning the back of the annual Ren Faire T-shirts.

Naomi Coffelt and Deb Sombs’ (director) fourth through sixth grade class presented scenes from Hamlet and Mac Beth, which amazed the crowd with their theatrical abilities. The finale was an hour-length production of “As You Like It” by the seventh and eighth grade class, directed by Ben Sombs. The students, along with the help of Mr. Sombs, created the abridgement for this production. The cast blew the audience away with their comedic timing and mastery of Shakespeare’s wit, which rivaled many a more experienced cast. They closed to a standing ovation and well-deserved praise of their many hours of practice and dedication which had resulted in such a spectacular production. All the productions were held at the Hillside Amphitheatre on hand-made benches crafted from logs set amidst the trees in a beautiful natural setting.

The action of the day then moved from theater to other Renaissance activities as Deb Baumann and her horse Sunny demonstrated “Riding for the Rings” to the audience’s applause. The day concluded with “Assault of the Castle”, the perennial favorite, with Joel and Ben Sombs’ at the helm of their authentic medieval catapult, the trebuchet. Melons, pineapples, croquet balls, and bags of flour were launched in a grand effort to destroy the model castle in the middle of the meadow. As always, flour was the favorite ammunition with its huge plume of dust.
.

Many thanks to all the students, staff, families, and guests who took part in the beautiful day and supported the academic success of KCA in the process!

Konocti Christian Academy is a private, non-profit school located in downtown Lakeport educating students in kindergarten through eighth grades since 2005.

various other goodies.

KCA students do not need to purchase
tickets or their meal. We are asking that
students be at the faire by 9:30 am. On the
back is a schedule of events, which will help
you determine at what point your child will be
performing. Other than the time of their
performance, attendance is not mandatory
but we would certainly love for everyone to
enjoy all the special features of our faire.

For our KCA families, if the ticket cost is
prohibitive to your attendance, please contact
the KCA office. We certainly want to see you
there! If you are unable to attend but you
would like your child to participate, please let
your child’s teacher know.
Since we only advertise our Renaissance Faire
by “word-of-mouth,” please feel free to invite
your family and friends who might be
interested in our wonderful event. We also
have Renaissance Faire flyers available in the
office if you would like to hand them out to
friends at church or your workplace.

COSTUMES
We encourage each student to wear a
costume. Students in K-3 may wear any
Renaissance-era costume. If your child is in
grades 4-8, please contact your child’s
teacher for specific costume information in
regard to their play character. We would like
to continue with our Costume Closet at KCA.
If you would like to donate an outgrown
costume from previous years, please drop it
off at the office. If your child is in need of a
costume, please stop by the office and visit
our Costume Closet to borrow a costume.
Parents, family and friends are also
encouraged to attend in period dress. There
will be a parade of costumes for students.

LOCATION
The Renaissance Faire will once again be
located at 3400 East Highland Springs Road in
Lakeport (thank you to the Scullys for opening
their property to us). A map is printed on the
back of the tickets. There is plenty of offroad parking

and a short walk to reach
“Shakespeare in the Meadow.” We
recommend sturdy shoes since the event is
outdoors. We will have transportation for
those unable to walk down to the meadow.
Some seating will be provided (bales of hay)
but you may want to bring a blanket or lawn
chair for your comfort.

FAIRE T-SHIRTS
Once again we will have Annual Renaissance
Faire T-shirts designed by Wes Nelms of
WesPhotos.com. The shirts are a wonderful
way to remember this year’s faire and to
support KCA. The names of our Knight and
Royal sponsors will grace the back of the
shirts. Details for ordering shirts is attached.

sponsor? We have three levels of
sponsorship: SQUIRE - $30 donation receives
name and logo on a banner displayed at faire;
KNIGHT - $50 donation receives name and
logo on banner and on the back of the Ren
Faire T-shirts; ROYAL - $100 donation receives
name and logo on banner and T-shirt, one free
like to donate to our auction? Or do you
know a local business that might like to
donate something to our auction? Please
call the office and let us know.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Parental participation is needed! We will be
asking all our parents to lend a hand either in
preparation prior to faire day or on faire day.
Soon we will be sending home a list with all
kinds of opportunities for you to help and it
will include shifts at specific booths. This is
the perfect time to volunteer those final PI
hours for the year!

KCA Hosts Birthday Party and Talent Show!

Konocti Christian Academy will celebrate its 5th Anniversary with a birthday party and Talent Show on March 19th. The birthday party will start at 5 p.m. at the Main Stage area of the Lake County Fairground. The Talent Show will follow at 7 p.m. at the Little Theater.

All Lake County students are invited to bring their best comedy acts, music and dance numbers, drama, and other types of creative entertainment for what is expected to be the biggest audience in KCA’s history. To participate, interested student performers should contact KCA by March 10th.

Many educators agree that performing in front of a live audience is an excellent way for students to develop confidence and leadership skills. As public school programs are being squeezed, KCA would like to offer this opportunity for all students in the Lake County community to develop skills sets and showcase achievements in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

KCA hosts a talent show each year, but this is the first time the venue has been open to the public. Becky Madison, KCA’s principal and talent show coordinator, is excited about opening the show to the Lake County community. "KCA offers the most wonderful partnership between the faculty and staff and the families we serve. Our students receive a rigorous academic program and quality interaction with their teachers. We strive to provide a safe and loving environment in which each student will achieve scholastically and grow personally."

KCA opened its doors 5 years ago as the dream of a core group of parents determined to offer rigorous academic training in a Christian environment. Since that time, the school has grown to over 50 students including Independent Study Program participants and has relocated to the fairgrounds in Central Lakeport .

The March 19th event will kick off with a birthday party celebrating KCA’s 5th anniversary complete with door prizes, goody bags, cake and ice cream, and a barbecue hot dog dinner. Parents, community members, and the public are invited to look at KCA’s classroom facilities, meet with students and staff, and become familiar with the school. KCA's first graduating class of outstanding scholars have been invited to share their remarkable academic achievements and the role that KCA played in their scholastic success.

Along with the festivities, KCA’s birthday party will kickoff a new scholarship fund so that KCA can become affordable to more Lake County students. The new fund will provide financial assistance to families who prefer a private, Christian based academic experience for their children but who cannot afford the tuition. Currently, KCA parents can participate in a Tuition Credit Program which provides an opportunity for tuition breaks through volunteer hours. For example, when parents volunteer to help out with an essential school function, they are given a discount off that month’s school tuition.

As new members of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, KCA’s official ribbon cutting ceremony will also take place at the party. Bill Stone, new Chamber Board Member and Chair of the Chamber’s membership committee, is happy to welcome the school. The membership committee is a newly formed group whose mission is to help new Chamber members get the most from their memberships. Bill and his committee will be working with KCA over the coming months to apprise them of the many benefits the Chamber can offer businesses and organizations that join.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. during the party. All local business people and especially Lake County Chamber of Commerce members are encouraged to participate.

KCA Vice President Michelle Scully looks forward to the birthday celebration. “All of us involved with KCA through the past five years have felt abundantly blessed through our involvement with the school . We are very proud and honored to have such amazing staff, students, parents, and families affiliated with and invested in KCA. We also greatly appreciate our relationship with and the vision of the Lake County Fair Board who partnered with us in developing the current site.

"Each new year provides additional opportunities for growth and we are very excited about the future. We envision more community outreach opportunities for the students and hope to include foreign language as a standard curriculum in the near future. Our core philosophy remains the same today as it did at our inception - highly qualified teachers, small class sizes, a bent toward classical education in a caring Christian environment - all which has been a winning equation for strong individual academic success. Our graduating students have gone on to outstanding academic successes of their own. "

Dickens#39 Christmas Market

KCA's 7th & 8th grade class will be hosting a jewelry booth at the Lakeport Dickens' Christmas Market in downtown Lakeport on Saturday, November 28th. Be sure to stop by KCA's booth when you visit the Dickens' Market and say hello to our 7th & 8th grade students.

They are earning money for their class trip at the end of the school year. This is a great opportunity to start your Christmas shopping. The market is open from 10 am to 7 pm with a lighted parade at 6 pm and the Christmas tree lighting at 7
pm .

H1N1 Influenza Information Update

In reviewing the most recent recommendations from the CDC and the Lake County Department of Health Services regarding H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu), KCA would like to communicate the following information:

Please continue to prevent the spread of illness by doing the following:

1. Check your children for symptoms of influenza (primarily fever with either a cough, sore throat, body aches, vomiting or diarrhea).
2. Keep sick children at home … Don’t send them to school.
3. Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water.
4. Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow.
5. Teach your children to keep their hands away from their face (mouth, nose, eyes).

Students who exhibit a fever will be sent home from school immediately.

Individuals who are sick with influenza-like illness must remain at home until:

1. 24-48 hours after they are free of fever (1000F) or signs of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications (our handbook states 24 hours but 48 hours would be best)
OR
2. seven days from onset of symptoms, whichever is longer.

Children are known to shed viruses longer than adults so by keeping them home longer you protect your child by not exposing their weakened immune systems to other viruses AND you protect other students and adults from becoming infected.

KCA is working hard to help keep our school environment free of germs by daily disinfecting student desks, chairs, door handles and handrails. Students are encouraged to use our foam hand sanitizer dispensers each time they enter and leave their classroom. Students are also encouraged to wash hands before snack and lunchtime.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

Additional information on H1N1 health alerts can be found at www.cdc.gov.

Road Superintendent, Mr. Steve Stangland and his crew demonstrated to the students some of the various heavy equipment the department uses on a daily basis. The students learned that the Public Works Department clears roads from snow and mudslides in addition to maintaining roads by repaving and filling in potholes, as well as, building bridges and cutting back brush along the roadways. They cover roads throughout Lake County including the dirt roads up to Lake Pillsbury and Bartlett Springs. In addition to teaching the students about the many tasks the Public Works Department completes, they helped the students cool down on this hot afternoon with a little water from their new tanker truck!
